In a recent development in Rajouri, a government teacher who was originally posted at Government Higher Secondary School Saaj in the Thanamandi sub-division had been reassigned to Sunderbani school by the education department following an alarming revelation. The matter came to the attention of the education department after a group of female students from Government Higher Secondary School Saaj came forward with a serious complaint alleging abuse and harassment by the said teacher.

Upon receiving the complaint, the students’ grievance was swiftly taken up by the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), who subsequently engaged with the local police authorities. This collaboration led to the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) at the Thanamandi police station, and the accused teacher was subsequently arrested.

The FIR, registered as No. 129/2023 under Sections 8/12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, was filed by the Child Welfare Committee in response to the victims’ complaint. Counselling services were also provided to the affected students.

In light of these troubling allegations, the Child Welfare Committee has planned a visit to the school on Monday to engage with other students and gather more information. It has been reported that a group of seven to eight girls approached the committee with a written complaint against the teacher, Ashrif Qureshi, detailing instances of physical and verbal abuse that had been ongoing for approximately a year.
