A man who traveled from Algeria to Paris by hiding in the landing gear compartment of a commercial plane has arrived in Paris. The man was found alive by technical staff after an Air Algeria flight from Oran, Algeria, landed at Paris Orly airport on Thursday.

An airport source told French news agency AFP that after the two-and-a-half-hour flight, the man was “alive but in critical condition due to severe hypothermia.” During which the temperature of the human body drops dangerously and in some cases this situation proves to be fatal.

Sources added that the man, believed to be in his 20s, had no identity card and was taken to a nearby hospital.

Commercial airplanes fly at altitudes of thirty to forty thousand feet (nine to twelve thousand meters), where temperatures typically drop to about minus 50 degrees and the lack of oxygen can make any passengers encroaching on the landing gear. There is no possibility of survival for the person as the landing compartment has neither oxygen nor heating.

According to data from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), between 1947 and 2021, 132 people attempted to travel in the landing gear compartments of commercial aircraft.

According to FAA data, the fatality rate of people attempting to travel this way was 77 percent. In April this year, a man’s body was found in the landing gear of a plane at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam.

In 2015, a British Airways flight from Johannesburg to Heathrow also found the body of a man hidden in the landing gear in a shop in Richmond, south-west London. Another person traveling in the same manner survived the ten-hour flight.(AFP)
